Easter holidays have arrived! Many parents will consider how to keep their children’s minds active and engaged while they’re off from school. While giving children a break from their usual routine is important, it’s also important to encourage continued learning and development during this time.
Here are some ideas for keeping children’s minds active during the Easter school holiday:
Reading
Encouraging your child to read for pleasure is an excellent way to broaden a child’s vocabulary, imagination and understanding of the world at any age! Take a trip to your local library and let your child choose some books that interest them. Set aside time each day for them to read, whether alone or with a parent (for younger students). You could also create a reading challenge where your child has to read several books or pages throughout the holiday. Add a reward for an extra level of motivation!
Creative Writing
Writing is a great way to help children develop their creativity and critical thinking skills. Encourage your child to write stories, poems, or journal during the Easter school holiday. Set aside time each day for them to write and offer prompts or topics to help get them started. You could also encourage them to create their own storybooks or comic strips or perform a play!
Cooking and Baking
Cooking and baking can be fun to keep children active during the Easter school holiday. Let your child help with meal planning and preparation, and encourage them to try new recipes. It is a great way to teach children about measurement and fractions. You could also incorporate some history or geography into your cooking and baking by exploring traditional Easter recipes from different cultures.
Science Experiments
Science experiments are a great way to engage children’s curiosity and encourage critical thinking. Many easy science experiments can be done at home with everyday materials. You could make a volcano erupt, create a homemade lava lamp, or explore the properties of water. These experiments can be a fun way to spend an afternoon and can lead to further exploration and learning.
Nature Walks or Garden Play
Spending time in nature is a great way to keep children active and engaged. Take a walk in a park, nature reserve or woods, or play in the garden and encourage your child to observe the world around them. You could create a scavenger hunt or nature journal to promote further exploration and engagement with nature. You could also use this to talk to your child about environmental issues and conservation. For older students, you challenge them, e.g. can they build a system to collect rainwater in the garden.
Arts and Crafts
Arts and crafts are a great way to encourage creativity and fine motor skills. Encourage your child to create their own art projects using various materials such as paint, clay or fabric. Why not create a family of paper mâché eggs to decorate. You could also explore different crafts worldwide, such as origami or weaving.
Board Games and Puzzles
Board games and puzzles are a great way to keep children active while promoting social interaction and teamwork. Puzzles are also a great way to encourage problem-solving skills and give parents working from home 20 minutes of peace while on a conference call! You could play traditional board games or try out new ones.
